SS2 4th Quarter Grades Preview

Now presenting the full grades preview for the final quarter of SS2. I’d like to kick off with a chart showing the progress in the average grades per class throughout the entire year.

And now the grades themselves. Consult the bottom of this post for a quick guide on how to calculate your grades. Let’s kick off with the Top 15!

Note for Champaca: Your LT1 grades have been upgraded one step up after Model ASEAN — as promised.

Now a quick guide on how to calculate your grades.

First off, this are the percentage equivalents I use in calculating the letter grades:

And this is the formula we’re using. Just replace the corresponding variables:

0.7(Q+0.3((LT1+LT2)/2)+0.3ASN+0.15PAR)+0.3((PERIO+SYN)/2)

Your ASEAN project grade (ASN) will follow a formula relative to your role in the project. Consult the rubrics included in the project guide I gave out at the beginning. I simply assigned A1-A4 to each component there but take note of the varying weights.

Now a note on the Synthesis Requirements (whether written or oral):

I’ve given a line of ‘A’ to those people who demonstrated confidence, clarity, and originality of thought in their respective work. If our SS2 lessons were a language, in the synthesis exam I looked at what you were actually saying.

If you got an ‘A-’, that means you still need to set a few facts straight. An ‘A’ means you got everything right but to get an ‘A+’, ‘A++’, or even an ‘S’ will require you to be original and even daring. Only one person got an ‘S’ for the synthesis exam. In her paper she showed unparalleled honesty and heart on top of being able to discuss all the issues incredibly intelligently.

To my SS2 students: Make sure that your ORAL EXAM APPOINTMENTS DO NOT CONFLICT with any of the above. Thank you!

SS2 Synthesis Exam

Note that there are two options.

The written exam will be on March 14, 7:30-9:00 at the ASTB-AVR. It is an on-the-spot essay with a theme similar to the thesis statements below.

The oral exam will begin on March 16, 7:30am and end on March 18 in the afternoon. Each student will have ten (10) minutes. We will begin with one statement, but move on to other topics and ideas as we go along.

You may bring all your notes and texts for the written exam. For the oral exam however, I will only allow five (5) pieces of 5×8 index cards.

Good luck! I highly recommend group study and conferencing in preparation for the exam.

Sign-ups begin on Thursday, March 10.

Download the PDF of the thesis statements.

Coverage of the SS2 exam

As announced in class, the SS2 exam will cover just the two PowerPoints we had for the quarter. (To some sections, I mentioned that the special readings are included. This is no longer the case.)  Nonetheless, you know that my slides contain a whole lot more info than what’s just there. For those of you who done your dharma throughout the quarter, sticking to the presentations will be fine. Those who haven’t done too well may have to catch up with the reading assignments.

Download the two PowerPoints here or at my Slideshare.

To Sir Carpon’s students: Sir and I are writing are own exams, but 60-70% of our questions will be coming from a common pool. This means we’ll be covering the same basic content but will vary for our analysis and synthesis due to our varying approaches for Southeast Asia.
